Description

The potters of Tentayape, which translates to “the last house”, live in an isolated region of Chaco Chuquisaqueño, home to Guaraní people. They have resisted Spanish colonisation and reclaimed the rights to their territory. They are wary of any external influence and focus on preserving and recovering their culture and way of life.

The potters use a pre-Hispanic technique of clay coils decorated with natural pigments. The elaboration process begins with a ceremony where they offer chicha to the earth asking permission to remove clay from the ground. Vases are painted with a mixture of clay and water. This tradition has been passed down from generation to generation since pre-Hispanic times.
